At Taking Steps Together (TST), you don't have to choose between good food and good fun. You'll be able to enjoy both.
TST is a nutrition and healthy lifestyle education program for families who are living with or are concerned about childhood obesity. Through weekly goal-setting, families will work toward healthy lifestyle changes. Families will share their experiences, learn from each other and contribute to the growth of the program.

Families are referred by their primary care provider within the HCMC system. Classes are facilitated by pediatric and nutrition health professionals in English and Spanish.

The kids and families from the latest Taking Steps Together class (tomando pasos juntos in Spanish), share four of their favorite recipes below.
Nutrient Dense Smoothies
Groovy Green Smoothie
2 bananas, chopped in pieces
2 cups of grapes
1 ½ cups of yogurt
1 apple cut up without seeds
2 cups of spinach (washed and cut up)
1-2 cups of ice
Directions
- Put all of the fruit, yogurt, spinach and ice in the blender.
- Cover the blender, and blend for 1-2 minutes. If needed scrape the sides of the blender to get all of the ingredients mixed.
- Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Triple Threat Smoothie
2 kiwis – cut up without the skin
1 cup of frozen blueberries
1 cup of frozen strawberries
1 cup of ice
½ cup of orange juice
1 cup of yogurt
1 cup of milk
Directions
- Put all of the fruit, ice, juice, yogurt and milk in a blender.
- Cover the blender, and blend for 1-2 minutes. If needed scrape the sides of the blender to get all of the ingredients mixed.
- Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Rainy Day Smoothie
1 mango – peeled and cut
1 can of pineapple in its own juice
1 cup of frozen peaches
1 cup of orange juice
1 cup of yogurt
1 cup of milk
1 cup of ice
Directions
- Put all of the fruit, ice, juice, yogurt and milk in a blender.
- Cover the blender, and blend for 1-2 minutes. If needed scrape the sides of the blender to get all of the ingredients mixed.
- Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Sweet Potato Smoothie
1 sweet potato – baked
1 ½ cup of yogurt
1 cup of milk
1 cup of ice
2 tablespoons of honey
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
Directions
- Cut the sweet potato into quarters and place it in a blender with the yogurt, milk, ice, honey and cinnamon.
- Cover the blender, and blend for 1-2 minutes. If needed scrape the sides of the blender to get all of the ingredients mixed.
- Pour into glasses and enjoy!
